Is this your first time seeking out professional counseling? Often times, taking the first steps to healing is the most difficult. The most important thing about therapy is that you are comfortable with your counselor. Please find some answers to Frequently Asked Questions that will help to put your mind at ease.

    What are counseling sessions like?

Sessions are 50 minutes in length. Our first session will be spent getting to know one another, reviewing guidelines for counseling pertaining to confidentiality, and how we will move forward together. We’ll focus on what brought you here and what you’d like to accomplish.

In the second session, we’ll talk more about your story and identify your strengths and potential areas of improvement.

The next session typically focuses on what issues you would like to tackle and how you’ll get there. We’ll also talk about the barriers and strategies to achieving those goals.

Next, we’ll take a look at your progress or obstacles that are keeping you from what you want to accomplish. Throughout our time together, we will continually assess your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of therapy is different for everyone and depends on your circumstances. Some find that a few sessions help resolve a very specific problem. While others that have more complicated issues find it valuable to talk to someone for a few months. People with longer-standing problems or difficult feelings often engage in longer-term therapy. Regardless of why you are coming to therapy, the goal is help you resolve problems and empower you to handle future difficulties that might arise. In some cases, people find it beneficial to return once or twice a year.

When you choose a therapist, talk to them about your needs and expectations. More importantly, you should feel comfortable and at ease talking with that person.

What type of license and experience do you have?

There are many different types of therapists including Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and mental health counselors. Each has their own approach. So it would be important to determine what suits you best.

What is your cancellation/no show policy?

Know the consequences of a missed session. Some may choose to charge you for abrupt cancellations or not showing up. Our office policies are a $100 fee for a no show and cancellations less than 24 hours in advance.

What kind of experience do you have with issues like mine?

Knowing that a therapist has worked with people that have experiences like yours can be comforting. A follow-up question for your therapist might be to ask what approach they would take.

What should I bring to my first session?

Most counselors will request that you complete some forms to help you get started. Completing this step beforehand allows you more time to talk during the first session. If you are using your healthcare benefits, you will need to bring your insurance carrier cards and identification.
